ISAIAH BRITTON  IS HOME- To tell this story my way I have to back up, pretty far back.It was 1959 and I had just been hired to fill a teaching-coaching vacancy in South Williamsport. When that school term opened I started to get to know who all of the “players” in the school sports program. Remember - in those days those sports were football in the fall, basketball and wrestling in the winter and track and field come spring time. Some of the area schools had just added tennis.

Penn College Bound Students, Parents to Benefit From Student-Aid Application Guidance

The Financial Aid Office at Pennsylvania College of Technology will offer free sessions on the main campus in Williamsport in February and March to help students, prospective students and families understand how to complete the 2010-11 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Both sessions will be held in the Advisement Center on the first floor of Penn College's Student and Administrative Services Center.

Hearing to Be Held in Williamsport February 3 to Take Public Testimony 

(HARRISBURG)  Sen. Gene Yaw, R-Loyalsock, said the demand for telephone numbers is once again causing the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to consider various options regarding customers in the 570 Area Code.  Yaw said that according to North American Numbering Plan Administrator NeuStar, (NANPA), a neutral third party administrator who assigns telephone numbers to phone companies indicates the 570 area code will exhaust all of its numbers by late 2011.

Lycoming Audubon Program to Explore Animal Tracks, Flu

Dr. Mary E. Morrison, assistant professor of biology at Lycoming College, will present "On the Right Track: Identifying and Interpreting Animal Tracks" and "Ask the Professor: Swine Flu (H1N1) and Bird Flu" at the Jan. 27 Lycoming Audubon Society meeting.
 
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the dining hall/recreation facility at the Little League Baseball Complex in South Williamsport.
 
Morrison holds a doctorate in microbiology from Columbia University and a bachelor's degree in molecular biology from Princeton University. Her areas of interest include cell biology, neuroscience, developmental biology and virology.

Truby to Return to Cutters in 2010

The Williamsport Crosscutters will be led by a familiar name next season.  The Philadelphia Phillies announced today that Chris Truby will return to manage the team in 2010.  It marks the first time that a Williamsport manager has returned for a second season since Tom Prince managed the Cutters in 2005 & 2006.
 
Truby led the Cutters to a 2nd place finish in the NY-P Pinckney Division in 2009 with a record of 42-34.  He hit .323 in the New York-Penn League with Auburn in 1994 and spent parts of four seasons in the majors with Houston (2000-2001), Montreal (2002), Detroit (2002) and Tampa Bay (2003).  As a major league rookie in 2000 he hit .260 with 11 home runs and 59 RBI.

Food Show Winners, Fundraising Results Announced

Rachel M. Emmons, of Washington, N.J., received the Best of Show Award at the annual Pennsylvania College of Technology Food Show for a two-tier cake she created in the Cakes and Decorations course.Williamsport - Works by baking and pastry arts students at Pennsylvania College of Technology were auctioned to raise more than $1,600 for Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity during the School of Hospitality's annual Food Show on Dec. 4.

The centerpiece of the fundraising effort was a silent auction of 12 chocolate houses created by students in the Principles of Chocolate Works course. Sold in live auction by Linden auctioneer Scott Younkin were holiday cakes, cookies, candy-filled chocolate boxes and yule logs.

Lycoming College announces administrative appointments

The College passed that test very well, given the serious funding problems now facing all colleges and universities, public and private. Knowing the experiences and perspectives they bring, I am delighted that Sue and Michelle have agreed to serve Lycoming College in their new roles."

Senate Agriculture Committee Examines Current Milk Pricing System

HARRISBURG - Sen. Gene Yaw, R-23, participated in an informational hearing today of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee to examine the current milk pricing structure to help struggling dairy farmers.
“The goal of the informational meeting was to learn about the milk pricing system,” Yaw said.

Mirabito's reform bill wins unanimous support in the House

On Tuesday, December 8, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives stood for reform in state government by voting unanimously for my bill that would bring transparency and accountability to state spending. 
 
The bipartisan support my H.B. 1880 has received since I introduced it in July is a great indicator that reform is alive and well in the state House. 
 
House Bill 1880 would create the Pennsylvania Government Accountability Portal, or PennGAP, a searchable Web site that would give the public access to Commonwealth expenses, including those of the state legislature. It would also include information on state agency contracts.

Faculty Member Elected to Accrediting Commission

Williamsport - Nancy A. Grausam, assistant professor of education and early childhood education at Pennsylvania College of Technology, recently was elected to serve on the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission on Elementary Schools.
 
The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools is an internationally recognized leader in accreditation of schools both in the Mid-Atlantic region and around the world. It is one of the six regional accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
